SW Junior Football Championship 1928

Schull 0-5   Myross 0-1   May 6th  in Skibbereen

On a fine day this was a poor game with no marking and lots of loose play. Limrick and John Hurley were prominent for Myross. Schull with wind led by 0-4 to 0-1 at half time, with Hayes scoring the Myross point. Only a single point was registered in second half, a Schull point by Jack McCarthy.  Best for Schull were O’Donoghue, Sweeney and McCarthy, while Fortune, D. Driscoll, Hayes and J. Donovan were outstanding for Myross.  Referee, Tim Regan, Skibbereen.

Barryroe and Dunmanway drew on May 6th in Clonakilty.

Bandon 2-2   Drinagh 1-1   May 13th  in  Rossmore

A beautiful day saw Drinagh playing with the wind in the first half. A Drinagh point was followed by a soft goal for Bandon by Dick Russell. C. O’Regan kicked a goal and a point for Bandon and at half time it was 2-1 to 0-1. Second half produced only two scores, a Drinagh goal and a Bandon point by P. O’Driscoll. H. O’Leary was outstanding for Bandon at half back.

Bantry 2-4   Drimoleague Nil   May 20th  in Drimoleague

A game of poor football in front of a large crowd. There were few thrills and little excitement as Bantry proved superior but Drimoleague put up sturdy fight. Rev P. Coakley P.P., threw in ball.  Referee, Mr. Kearns.

Skibbereen 1-3   Bandon 1-3    July 1st in Kilmeen

Despite the inclement weather this was a cracking contest. Skibb were favourites but with the elements, Bandon led by 1-3 to nil at the break. Skibb dominated the second half and eventually drew level. Bandon did well to hang on for a draw. Jim O’Regan, the Bandon goalie, was a hero for his side. Liam Deasy was the referee.

Replay   -  Skibbereen 1-1  Bandon Nil    August 12th in Kilmeen.

This was a fast and lively game with a thrilling second half. Skibb, with the wind in first half, had a goal from Hartnett, and point in ten minutes. There was no further score in first half. Bandon, with strong breeze in second half, did most of the pressing but couldn’t beat a fine Skibb defence. Rough tactics resulted in injuries, two players being sent off. Michael Lohane was Skibb’s best player. It finished 1-1 to nil. Referee, Liam Deasy. (Teams)

Objection  -  Bandon objected to Skibbereen. At the Board meeting on Wednesday,  September 5th in the Railway Hotel, Dunmanway, a sub-committee was set up to hear the objection, consisting of two from Kilmeen, two from Drimoleague, with Jack Young, Dunmanway, as chairman. Skibbereen won the objection.

Bantry 1-1 Schull  1-1,  July 8th        in Skibbereen

A moderate crowd watched a poor game, which only got exciting in the closing ten minutes. At half time Bantry led by 1-0 to 0-1, the goal coming from Tim Harrington. Schull’s two scores came from Strapp. O’Keeffe was also outstanding for Schull, with McCarthy, Donoghue and Gallagher also doing well. For Bantry, Harrington, Keyes (“whose weight against a heavier side was useful”), O’Brien and Tim Sullivan impressed.

Replay Bantry 2-2    Schull 1-0  August 12th in Durrus

Rough display of football in front of a large gathering saw Bantry well in control.

Replay - Dohenys 2-4  Barryroe Nil ,  July 8th in Kilmeen

A large crowd saw Barryroe defending well in the first half, Dohenys leading by 0-2 to nil at the break, with perfect arrangements in Kilmeen. A better-trained Dunmanway side pulled away in the second half to win by 2-4 to nil.

After the game, Rossmore N.S. beat Bealad N.S. by 2 goals to nil in a challenge football game.

Semi-final  -  Dohenys 2-1 Skibbereen 0-1,  Sept 23rd in Drimoleague.

The pitch was a mile west of the village. Dohenys were late arriving and Skibbereen claimed the game. The referee awarded the game to Skibb and some of their players left. Dohenys eventually arrived and Sibb wanted to play a friendly to entertain the supporters. Dohenys would only agree to a champion ship game being played. Eventually a game was played which was won by Dohenys by 2-1 to 0-1.

Before the game began Skibbereen objected to Dohenys on the grounds that they were late for the match. The objection was handed to the captain of the Doheny team but it was Dohenys who were awarded the game at the SW Board.

  SOUTH-WEST JUNIOR A FOOTBALL  FINAL    1928

                                            September 30th  in Dunmanway

                                                  Bantry 2-2     Dohenys 0-5

Dohenys, having overcome Skibbereen, were highly confident of beating Bantry in the final. A record crowd attended and there were some fine individual displays of football. Dohenys were the sounder footballers but Bantry excelled at handpassing. Rev. J. O’Sullivan, Dunmanway, threw in the ball and the referee was J. Whelan, Bandon. Young opened scoring with a point, and Mullen added a free. McKenna scraped the crossbar with a third point. Roche scored a fourth point as Dohenys dominated. Con Clifford scored Bantry’s first point. It was 0-4 to 0-1 at half time. Walsh kicked a fifth Doheny point before Bantry began to get a grip on the game, with the sun to their backs. Bantry kicked a point and J. Dullea cleared a 50.

Bantry kept up the pressure and a mistake in the Doheny defence saw Clifford scoring a goal to level the scores. Play was exciting as both sides looked for a winning score, with a number of minor injuries. Bantry were staying the pace better and a centre from Keenan was deflected to the Doheny net for the winning goal eight minutes from time.

     Final score, 2-2 to 0-5.

     Bantry T. Harrington (capt..), B. Cotter, R. P. Keyes, P. Brien, P. Murphy, J. Keohane, M. Keegan, C. Clifford, T. Keohane, T. Sullivan, J. Dunne, Seán McCarthy, R. Power, D. Harvey, C. Keyes. Subs, D. Harrington, D. O’Mahony

     Referee, J. Whelan, Bandon. .

It is believed that Dohenys lodged an objection to Bantry but it was the Blues who advanced to the county championship.

“Southern Star”    October 6th  1928

County Championship

Bantry met Garnish in Castletownbere on October 28th. With the breeze in the first half, Bantry dominated and led by 2-1 to nil at half time. In the second half Garnish did most of the pressing but the Bantry defence was very solid, with Keyes almost unbeatable. Garnish managed a goal and a point but Bantry held on to win by 2-1 to 1-1. Referee, L. O’Shea, Clonakilty.

Bantry advanced to meet Mid-Cork champions, Ballyvourney, in the county semi-final on November 11th , a game that was played in Inchigeela in atrocious weather conditions. The game was very evenly contested. Bantry attacked early on with M. O’Donoghue registering a goal and Keegan a point. At half time it was Bantry in front by 1-1 to 0-1. Ballyvourney did most of the attacking in the second half, scoring a goal per Healy to level the scores. Bantry kicked the winning point, a free from Keegan, in the dying minutes. It finished 1-3 to 1-2 in Bantry’s favour.

The referee was J. Whelan of Bandon, who with his crew of six officials actually got lost on the way back to Bandon afterwards and ended up in Inchigeela again.

COUNTY JUNIOR A FOOTBALL  FINAL  1928

December 2nd  in Bandon

Bantry 2-2     Mitchelstown 2-1

Bantry met Mitchelstown in the county final in the Bogs in Bandon on December 2nd. The North Cork champions had beaten Geraldines from the city and then Midleton in the county championship.

A special excursion train brought a large crowd from Bantry and the pitch was in good condition. Bandon Pipers’ Band attended. The game was played at a fast pace throughout. Bantry did some early pressing but failed to score. They then conceded an easy goal and shortly before half time Keyes kicked a point for the Blues, who trailed by 1-0 to 0-1 at the break.

On the restart Mitchelstown scored a second goal and for a while Bantry seemed disheartened. Slowly, they began to fight back and a point from a free was followed by a goal to close the gap to a single point. Mitchelstown followed up with a pointed free but minutes from time the SW champions kicked a fine goal after a succession of attacks. It was the first time they led in the game and although Mitchelstown almost goaled from a melee two minutes from time, Bantry hung on to win the county title by a single point, 2-2 to 2-1.

     The referee was J. Beckett, N.T., B.A.
