SW Junior A Football  Championship 1940

 Round 1  -  Durrus 1-2   Lowerton 0-1     March 31st  in Schull

Lowerton were more robust but newly-formed Durrus were more scientific. Durrus, with the wind, had two points but Lowerton responded with a point. The score at half time was 0-2 to 0-1 but Durrus used their speed and cleverness against the wind in the second half and scored the vital goal. Lowerton had chances but inaccuracy proved their downfall.

      Referee was P. H. O’Donovan, Ballydehob.

Round 1  -  Carbery Rangers 1-3   Clonakilty 0-4    April 29th  in Rosscarbery

Football of the highest standard was played despite the sodden pitch and greasy ball. Confusion was caused by the new kick-out rule. Rangers dominated the first half following a goal by J. McCarthy and they led by 1-2 to 0-1 at half time. Clon pressed hard during the second half and points from T. O’Regan, M. Driscoll and W. Football closed the gap to a single point but P. Murray kicked a late vital point for the Ross men as they held on for a narrow two-point win against the unlucky Clon men.

Round 1  -  Skibbereen 2-5  Scart 0-1    April 29th  in Ballydehob

A flying first half with the wind saw Skibbereen leading by 2-4 to nil at half time. Skibb continued to dominate against the wind in the second half, which was punctuated with a lot of stoppages because of supporters invading the pitch. Order was restored without any major incident. Each side scored a point in the second half. Referee, Jack Levis, Ballydehob.

Round 2  -  Carbery Rangers 5-1   Durrus 1-6     June 2nd     in Ballydehob

Experienced Carbery Rangers proved too good for the new Durrus outfit, who went down to defeat gallantly and sportingly.

Round 1  -  Dohenys 3-2   Drimoleague 0-1       June 2nd  in Bantry

Drimoleague gave as good as they got in the first half but a weakness in the forward division cost them scores. Dohenys led by 2-0 to 0-1 at half time and, against the wind, were well on top all through the second half as the Scorchers faded from the game. Referee was Tom Vaughan.

Round 1  -  Schull 3-3  Bantry 3-0   July 14th      in Durrus  (not finished)

Schull were in sparkling form in the first half and led by 2-3 to nil at half time. In the third quarter Schull withstood a lot of Bantry pressure and added a goal to their tally. Bantry rallied in the last quarter, kicking two goals and excitement mounted. Bantry kicked a third goal which was disputed and when matters were sorted out, it was found that the only football, provided by Bantry, was missing and the game had to be cancelled. Michael Gallagher, N. T., Durrus, was the referee.

Replay -  Schull beat  Bantry      August 4th   in Durrus

In a sporting contest, Schull emerged winners by a single point.

Round 1  -  Glengarriff 1-5    St. Mary’s, Enniskean 1-4       June 23rd  in Bantry

Enniskean were missing a number of players through injury and being called up for army duty but a vastly-improved Glengarriff created a big surprise when winning by a point in a highly entertaining contest. Fielding well  and playing with confidence, the Glen, who trailed by 1-2 to 0-3 at the break, kicked two quick points in a row on the restart and then struck for the vital goal. Referee was Mr. McCarthy, Bantry.

      Enniskean later lodged an objection

Round 2  -  Dohenys 3-1   Schull 2-3         August 11th  in Skibbereen

This was an exciting if substandard game which finished in a welter of excitement. There was little between the teams all through with Dohenys scoring two rather fortunate goals. There were no stand-out footballers, with the football of a haphazard kind. Schull’s tendency to overdo the handpassing proved costly as they had a goal and a point disallowed. The closing minutes were spent around the Doheny goal as Schull sought an equalising or winning score. With time up, Schull were awarded a free, 14 yards out in front of the goal but, amazingly, the kicker went for a goal instead of an equalising point and the shot was blocked. The referee was Fr. John McCarthy, Baltimore Fisheries.

Semi-final  -  Carbery Rangers 4-3   Glengarriff 1-3      August 18th  in Dunmanway

The overall display was poor with Glengarriff seeming to lack training and combination. Two goals from J. McCarthy saw dominant Rangers leading by 3-3 to nil at half time. Glengarriff did well in the third quarter, keeping the Ross forwards at bay, with the goalkeeper in particular, doing very well. However, a third goal from J. McCarthy finished the game although Glegarriff never gave up and kicked a goal and two points late in the game. For Ross, the McCarthy brothers, Jim Hodnett and Fachtna O’Donovan stood out, while Hodnett, Downey, Deasy and the two O’Sullivan’s did well. The referee was Jim Young, Dohenys F.C.

Round 2 -  Skibbereen 2-5 Timoleague 0-2          August 18th   in Skibbereen

The final score did little justice to the efforts of Timoleague. Skibb played with the breeze but lack of co-ordinated play and poor shooting cost them scores. A goal by Sheehan gave the home side a lead of 1-3 to 0-1 at half time, Jerry Holland kicking Timoleague’s only point. Timoleague applied a lot of pressure in the third quarter but the Skibb backs weren’t giving an inch. A goal by O’Donovan finished the game as a contest and the closing stages were riddled with a lot of fouling. The referee was Fr. J. McCarthy, manager, Baltimore Fishery Schools.

Semi-final  -  Dohenys 1-3   Skibbereen 1-2    September 8th  in Rosscarbery

Skibbereen were short seven of their team, four of whom had joined the army and three had left the town. Despite this handicap, Skibbereen were very competitive. Playing with the breeze, they had points from P. Carey and G. McCarthy, but Dohenys replied with a goal from John Nyhan, to lead by 1-0 to 0-2 at half time. John Leary increased Dohenys’ lead after the break but a goal by T. O’Driscoll put Skibb in front amid great excitement. Dohenys levelled and then F. O’Driscoll became the Dunmanway hero with a winning point in the dying minutes. Referee, Liam Ahern, Clonakilty. .

SW Final

The final between Dohenys and Carbery Rangers was due to be played on September 22nd in Enniskean but all GAA activity was cancelled due to the death of Mosr Rev. Dr. Casey, Bishop of Ross.

SOUTH-WEST JUNIOR A FOOTBALL FINAL 1940

September 29th     in   Enniskean

Carbery Rangers 2-1    Dohenys 0-3

A huge crowd turned up for this eagerly-awaited final but, unfortunately, the game was dull and lifeless. The fine weather promised a good game but both teams failed to produce championship form.

“During the entire hour play was of a wild, scrambling character, and constructive movements were definitely at a premium.”

Rangers were the taller and heavier team  and that was the decisive factor in the end as both teams were evenly matched on the football front. Numerous wides due to faulty shooting were the order of the day and only the closeness of the scoring kept any interest in the game. There were few outstanding players and those who stood out were more sound and reliable than brilliant.

Dohenys opened the scoring with a point from Nyhan and rangers responded with a goal from Murray, the only scores of the first half. After a lot of missed chances in the second half, Dohenys closed the gap to a single point with a score from Crowley. Burke struck the vital blow for rangers when he kicked a goal to increase the lead to four points.

Frees and wides were now the order of the day at both ends before Burke pointed for Ross and despite a lot of pressure in the closing stages all Dohenys could manage was a point from Nyhan.

Best for the winners were Cahill and Burke, with McCarthy, O’Regan, Hayes and Murray also doing well. For Dohenys, McCarthy, O’Leary, Crowley, O’Driscoll and Nyhan were most prominent.

      Scorers: Carbery Rangers – D. Burke 1-1, P. Murray 1-0. Dohenys – J. Nyhan 0-2, D. Crowley 0-1.

      Referee, A. O’Driscoll, Bandon.

       Carbery Rangers: D. O’Regan, T. Cahill, J. J. Hayes, R. Casey, D. Sheehan, M. O’Donovan, D. O’Regan, F. O’Donovan, J. McCarthy, J. Hodnett, D. Collins, R. Cunningham, P. Murray, D. Burke, P. Sheehan.

      Dohenys: C. McCarthy, J. O’Donovan, W. Keane, J. O’Leary, J. Nyhan, D. McCarthy, F. McCarthy, B. Kelly, Denis Crowley, Daniel Crowley, T. Hegarty, F. O’Driscoll, R. Buttimer, D. O’Neill, P. Coughlan.

County Championship

Carbery Rangers were nominated to represent Carbery in the county championship and met Beara champions, Garnish, in Bantry on September 8th and were hot favourites to advance. A big surprise ensued when Garnish led at half time by two points to nil in poor conditions in a low-scoring game. Rangers closed the gap to a point, missing a good goal chance, but Garnish again made it two. Try as they might in the closing minutes Rangers could only add a single point, so Garnish advanced on a score of 0-3 to 0-2.

By coincidence, Garnish were beaten in the semi-final by Ballincollig by the same score, 0-3 to 0-2. Ballincollig went on to beat Youghal by three points in the final.
