POINT MARGIN
COURCEY ROVERS SUCCEED IN FINAL
----------------
A thrilling game, with only a single point dividing the teams at the end, was the outcome of the meeting of Clonakilty and Courcey Rovers in the final of the South West Cork Junior Hurling Championship at Kilbrittain last Sunday.
Clonakilty led for most of the game but in the last quarter the defence wilted under severe Courcey Rovers pressure.
There was a very large attendance of spectators.
The Courcey Rovers team was: -
L. Keogh, R. Scott, J. Keohane, G. O’Donovan, S. Hales, M. Nolan, C. O’Regan, D. O’Sullivan, D. P. Griffin, M. Fitzgerald, J. Connolly, C. Corcoran (capt..) , T. Fitzgerald, D. Collins, J. Coakley. Substitute – J. Nyhan for J. Connolly.

CLONAKILTY NOTES - ‘Hurling Final - Clonakilty’s last team in the championship has been eliminated, the junior hurlers being beaten by the Courcey Rovers in the final at Kilbrittain last Sunday. They made a bold bid for the honours and were only beaten by the narrowest of margins – a single point. As a matter of fact they may be considered unlucky not to have gained the verdict as their goalman had an off-day and some of the goals against them were of the ‘soft’ variety.’
BANDON BRIEFLETS - ‘Point Margin – Courcey Rovers again won the South West Cork Hurling championship by beating Clonakilty in the final at Kilbrittain last Sunday on the score of three goals and two points to three goals and a point. They were well-served by C. Corcoran, captain, M. Fitzgerald and M. Nolan, while J. Collins, J. Ahern and M. Walsh did best for Clonakilty.’
ALL THE SPORTS (Southern Star) - ‘The final and the semi-final of the South-West Cork Junior hurling and football championships were both chock full of excitement and in both cases the issue was in doubt up to the final whistle.
The issue in the hurling decider in which Courcey Rovers and Clonakilty were in opposition, was in the balance up to the end and then a well-taken point gave victory to the Rovers. This game was marked by hard, fast pulling and fine combination on the part of both teams. Courcey Rovers were that little fraction faster than their well-known rivals and their younger members, particularly Hales, Fitzgerald and O’Regan, showed craft of a high order.’

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
On October 23rd Courcey Rovers met Castlelyons in the Athletic Grounds, as a curtain-raiser to the county senior football final in which Lees beat Macroom by four points. The score at the end of a one-sided contest was 5-7 to 0-2. C. Corcoran, M. Fitzgerald, P. Griffin and D. Sullivan tried hardest for Courceys.

JUNIOR HURLING LEAGUE 1955
The final of the 1955 Junior Hurling League wasn’t played until March 18th, 1956, with reigning league champions, Courcey Rovers, facing O’Donovan Rossa in Clonakilty. Courceys were the more experienced side and their first-time hurling gave them a decided advantage. Though playing against the wind in the first half, they led by 3-0 to 1-1. Rossa’s played much better in the second half, closing the gap to a goal, but Courceys pulled away at the end to win by 6-0 to 2-3. This completed the hurling double for 1955.
Thady O’Regan, Clonakilty, refereed the final and best for the winners were O’Sullivan, Farr and Nolan. Best for Rossa’s were Gaffney, J. Davis and T. O’Brien.
JUNIOR B HURLING FINAL
“O’Donovan Rossa defeated Barryroe at Burgatia last Sunday in the South-West Cork Junior Hurling final, Grade B, by four goals eight points to four goals four points. The game was fast all through and honours evenly divided, Rossa’s, however, seemed stronger at centre-field.”

Teddy McCarthy
In the history of hurling and football
A special true place must be found
For one who now stands undisputed
And whose feats that have been so profound;
He hails from the village of Glanmire,
The home of some great hurling stock,
And his name it is Teddy McCarthy,
The pride and the joy of famed Cork.
His deeds they will live on forever -
Recounted by young and by old -
And whenever true Gaels do assemble
His glory will always unfold;
Let's honour a high-fielding wonder -
No longer just one of the pack -
He stands all alone in his glory,
The only and one Teddy Mac.!
