South-West Junior Football Draws 1937
Clonakilty v Bandon, Bantry v Drimoleague, Dohenys v Enniskeane, Skibbereen v Carbery Rangers.
SW Junior A Football Championship 1937
Round 1 - Carbery Rangers 1-3 Skibbereen 1-1 April 25th in Skibbereen
This game was won and lost in the opening quarter when Carbery Rangers were in complete control and, much better at catching and long kicking, they scoreded 1-2 as they appeared to be heading for a comprehensive victory. To Skibbereen’s credit, they recovered from the bad start and gave as good as they got for the remainder of the game, outscoring Rangers by 1-1 to 0-1. Skibb were out of luck when twice striking the crossbar. Best for Rangers were R. Cunningham, M. Hayes, O’Regan (Downeen), Jeremiah McCarthy, Donovan, Collins and Casey. For Skibbereen, McCarthy, Sheehy, Collins, Carey, Cummins and P. J. O’Sullivan impressed.
Round 1 - Enniskean 3-4 Doheny Jnrs 1-1 May 16th in Enniskean
An average game.
Round 1 - Bandon 0-6 Clonakilty 0-1 July 18th in Kilbrittain
Bandon were dominant in every position and led by 0-3 to nil at half time. Clon rallied in the second half but the Bandon defence was too strong. P. O’Dricoll, T. Gabriel, O’Leary, Murphy and Lane were among the Bandon scorers.
Semi-final - Enniskean 0-2 Carbery Rangers 0-1 July 25th in Dunmanway
In front of a large crowd play was of a very even nature, with both sets of backs on top. Only a single point, by Howe, was registered in the first half. Rangers dominated the third quarter and secured an equalising point. The game looked destined for a draw until the very last minute when Enniskean kicked a winning point, 0-2 to 0-1. Referee, Tim Harrington, Bantry.
Objection?
Although no record of such could be found, Carbery Rangers must have objected to Enniskean because the semi-final was refixed for September 26th in Bantry.
Semi-final - Bantry Jnrs. 2-3 Bandon 0-3 August 29th in Rosscarbery
This was a poor semi-final, with Bantry well on top all through. But for some poor forward play they would have won by much more. The standard was extremely poor and twice the players tried to take the law into their own hands. The game was played in Rosscarbery’s new pitch at Burgatia.
Bantry attacked from the beginning but good defending by Bandon meant it was all of ten minutes before the Blues had a shot at the posts. It was Bandon who opened the scoring with a point from T. Gabriel and despite constant pressure, it was all of twenty minutes before Bantry replied with a P. Daly goal. Dave Murphy added anothergreen flag and it was 2-0 to 0-1 for the Blues at half time.
Bandon were first to score again in the second half but in a poor half Bantry kicked three points while Bandon added one more.
Semi-final Replay - Carbery Rangers 2-1 Enniskean 1-1 September 26th in Bantry
Better at catching and field tactics, Rangers deserved this win in a game that sparked into life only in patches, with the best being kept to the closing ten minutes when champions, Enniskean, did their utmost to pull the game out of the fire.
After only five minutes Sheehan opened the scoring for Ross with a goal but that was to be the only score of the half. Sheehan did add a point but it was disallowed. Only great saves by the Ross full back and goalkeeper prevented Mahoney from equalising for Enniskean in the opening minutes of the second half. Great play between Vaughan and McCarthy produced a second Ross goal. When Gus Keohane kicked a goal for Enniskean the lead was halved and within minutes the gap was down to two points following Enniskean’s only point.
Jimmy McCarthy, who had retired injured, returned to the field for Ross and, amid great excitement, he kicked a beauty of a point to seal victory, even though outstanding full back, Vaughan, had to clear one last Enniskean attack.
The referee was Timmy Harrington, Bantry Blues.
Three of the Carbery Rangers team, Jimmy McCarthy, Dan Sheehan and John Hodnett, had been members of the Carbery senior football team a few weeks previously that had won the divisional side’s first-ever county title, beating champions, Duhallow West, in the final.

County Championship
The SW championship was well behind schedule because of Carbery’s progress to the county senior football final and Carbery Rangers were nominated to represent the Division in the county junior championship. They met Beara champions, Lauragh, on October 10th in Bantry. Lauragh, were in fact, in Co. Kerry but were allowed to participate in the Beara championship and had beaten Ardgroom in the Beara final by 1-1 to 0-1.
The report on the Ross v Lauragh game was fairly scathing in its condemnation of the overall standard and the resulting apathy among the supporters. Lauragh, with the slope, led by 3-1 to nil at half time but Ross staged a comeback in the second half and cut the lead to two points. In their anxiety to draw level Ross missed numerous chances and forgot to defend, conceding 2 goals and 1 point in six attacks by Lauragh in the second half. It finished 5-2 to 3-5.)
A letter to the Southern Star the following week by Bantry star player, Dannie McCarthy, who was a touch judge at the game, strongly condemned the match report, stating that it was a fine game of football that kept the crowd excited all through.
Carbery Rangers now had to focus their attention on the SW final against Bantry. It had been a great year for the Blues. They backboned the Carbery team that won the county senior title, reached the intermediate final, which they lost to St. Nick’s in a replay, and their second team were in the SW final against Carbery Rangers. Their junior hurlers had surprised everybody by taking eventual champions, Bandon, to three games.

SOUTH-WEST JUNIOR A FOOTBALL FINAL 1937
October 24th in Town Park, Skibbereen
Carbery Rangers 3-4 Bantry Blues Jnrs 2-0
Although the game was not up to standard for a final, there were some tremendous duels, especially in the closing stages. Again, Rangers’ catching and long kicking were the crucial factors in a well-deserved win. A goal by Burns early in the game set Ross on their way. A deflected point followed and when McCarthy goaled, Rangers were seven points in front after only seven minutes. Bantry finally began to get their act together and outstanding winger, Daly, dropped in a high ball, which slipped through the goalie’s hands into the net. It was 2-3 to 1-0 at half time and the third quarter was all Bantry, with Daly causing all kinds of problems on the wing. Several balls hit the Ross posts before the ball was finally driven home to cut the lead to three points.
Rangers weathered the storm and dominated the final quarter, putting a lot of pressure on the Bantry defence. They finished with a goal and a point to emerge convincing winners by 3-4 to 2-0. Tom Cahill’s long kicking was again a strong feature of Rangers’ play.
Referee, Tim Regan, Skibbereen.
