SW Junior A Football Championship 1939

Round 1  -  Carbery Rangers 1-2    Schull 0-4    April 16th  in Skibbereen

Schull came within minutes of knocking out the champions following a tremendous display of defending. Playing with the wind, Schull, with less possession, kicked four fine points, while Rangers failed to score in the first half, missing many chances. It took the Ross men ten minutes to register their first point with the wind in the second half and some great defending by the Schull backs limited them to only one other point for the following twenty minutes. Vaughan, Griffin, Newman and Arundel were outstanding for Schull. Both goalkeepers, the veteran Roycroft for Schull and Regan for Rangers covered themselves in glory with some superb saves. With a couple of minutes remaining Rangers were awarded a “fifty” and Cahill, the Ross captain, drove the ball into the Schull goal area. In the ensuing melee, McCarthy got his toe to the ball to poke it into the Schull net. Heartbreak for Schull, delight for the champions. Referee, Tom Cottam, Skibbereen.

Round 1  -  Clonakilty beat Drimoleague  April 21s

Round 1  -   Skibbereen  3-5  St. Mary’s nil     April 23rd  in Clonakilty

Avery young Skibbereen team, with most of the minors from the previous year, played some sparkling football as they held St. Mary’s scoreless for the hour.

Round 1  -  Bandon 1-5  Doheny Jnrs. 1-1    April 30th  in Enniskean

With rain falling for the hour, Bandon created a surprise when defeating Dohenys, dominating the game from start to finish. J. Lane, captain, was the Bandon hero, with numerous scores to his name, and he got good support from Murphy, Crowley and Gabriel. Best for Dohenys were D. McCarthy, Hennessy, the O’Neill’s and O’Mahony. A goal and two points from Lane saw Bandon leading by 1-2 to 0-1 at half time. A Doheny goal soon after half time closed the gap to a single point but that was to be their last score as Bandon went on to add three points to their total. Referee, Gus Keohane, Enniskean.

Round 1  -  Kilbrittain 4-2   Lowertown 1-2     May 7    in Rosscarbery

Midfield domination saw Kilbrittain registering a decisive win over  depleted Lowertown outfit. J. Madden was the scoring hero in the first half as he kicked 1-2, as Kilbrittain led by 2-2 to 0-1 at the break. An early Kilbrittain goal on the restart finished the game as a contest and J. Hallissey added a fourth before Lowertown finished with a goal from Pat Gallagher. Referee, Sgt. J. Holmes.

Round 2  -  Bantry Blues Jnrs 1-7   Clonakilty Jnrs 0-4    June 4th  in Skibbereen

A contrast in styles as Clonakilty used their weight and size while a youthful Bantry concentrated on the ball. In a poor game, there was far too much hand-passing. “On a few occasions, there were veritable orgies of passing.” Play was “confused and listless,” as Clonakilty missed many scores with the wind but led by 0-3 to nil at the break. A goal and several points by Cotter in the second half gave Bantry a well-deserved victory. Referee, Tom Cottom, Skibbereen.

Semi-final  -  Carbery Rangers 4-10   Kilbrittain 1-0         August 20th  in Clonakilty

Rangers were never really extended in this semi-final following an early goal from P. Murphy. Further goals from

  1. Murray and D. Mehigan gave Ross a half time lead of 3-4 to nil. J. Regan had an early goal for Kilbrittain in the second half, their only score of the game, but Rangers replied with a goal from J. Hodnett. Murray, Mehigan and J. McCarthy were the chief point scorers for the winners. Referee, Chris Kiely, Clonakilty.

Semi-final  -  Skibbereen  beat   Bantry Blues   August 27th  in Drimoleague

The heavy going suited the heftier Skibbereen side and they led by two goals. However, a fine comeback by Bantry tied  the scores and when they took a point lead, it seemed they might just shade the outcome. It was not to be, as Skibb finished strongly to advance to the final against Carbery Rangers. In a tough, robust but sporting game, the Reds emerged winners by three points.===================================================================

County Championship

Carbery Rangers met Beara champions, Eyeries, on September 17th in Bantry and were extremely lucky to survive. Having led by 1-6 to 0-1 at half time, with Jimmy Hodnett outstanding in defence, they were put to the pin of their collar in the second half to withstand an Eyeries comeback. There was only four points in it in the closing stages when the Beara men were awarded a penalty but the shot was driven wide. Rangers won by 1-7 to 0-5.

This put Carbery Rangers into their first county final since distant 1906, when they had lost the county senior final to Fermoy. Opponents in the final were Midleton.
