Courcey Rovers 9-0    O’Donovan Rossa 2-1

July 18th   in Rosscarbery

============================================

"SEEN AND HEARD – ‘Round and About Skibbereen’  -  Well Beaten – Skibbereen were beaten by a big margin in the final of the South West Cork Junior Hurling Championship which was played at Rosscarbery on Sunday. Play was close enough in the first half but the rather rough and sometimes questionable tackling of some of the Courcey Rovers players who formed the opposition was something that they could not cope with. At no stage did the game produce anything approaching a good standard of hurling. Although the winners got a few of the soft variety of goals, they were certainly worth more scores than the Skibbereen side. The result was: Courcey Rovers 9 goals, Skibbereen 2 goals 1 point."

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Courcey Rovers were beaten by South-East winners, Carrigaline, on September 19th in Kinsale by 4-7 to 2-5.

SW CHAMPIONSHIP 1948

Semi-final  -   - Courcey Rovers 1-10  Clonakilty 2-4,  April 11th  in Bandon

Having played in intermediate ranks in 1947, Clon were back in junior ranks and were favoured to beat the champions but a good first half with the wind saw Courceys leading by 0-7 to 1-1 at the break. A quick goal and point by the winners was essential as  Clon rallied  to cut the lead to two but heroics by goalkeeper O’Connell kept Courceys in front as they registered a well-deserved three-point win. Referee, Seán Crowley, Bandon.

Semi-final  -  O’Donovan Rossa 5-1  Kilbrittain 1-3   April 25th  in Clonakilty

This was a decisive win by Rossa’s in a sporting contest that was good in patches. Rossa’s were grateful to half a dozen outstanding individuals but were not well-balanced as a team. They led by 3-1 to 1-1 at the break. Rossa’s – J. McSweeney, M. Leahy, P. O’Donovan, G. Carey, M. Walsh, J. Goggin, P. Dreddy, F. O’Connell, J. Lenihan, P. Carey, M. O’Dea, M. Casey, S. Kelly, D. Connolly. Referee, Thady O’Regan, Clonakilty

SOUTH-WEST CONVENTION

According to the rúnaí, Gus Keohane, at the annual convention at Bernard’s Railway Hotel, Dunmanway, on January 23rd, 1949, “In the junior hurling number 1 competition (1948), four teams took part, Clonakilty, Courcey Rovers, O’Donovan and Kilbrittain. Three matches were played, Courceys defeating O’Donovan Rossa in the final. It would be noticed that the number of teams entering that competition was declining each year and something would have to be done to revive interest before the championship became a thing of the past. Eleven teams entered in the junior hurling number 2 competition.”
