SW Junior A Football Championship 1948

Semi-final   -     Bandon 4-3   O’Donovan Rossa 0-4        May 16th  in  Clonakilty

A much better Bandon side combined well and their nifty forwards availed of their scoring opportunities against a disappointing Skibbereen team that depended too much on a few individuals. Weather conditions were poor and the standard of play was disappointing for the small attendance. E. O’Driscoll and G. McCarthy were among the Bandon scorers, playing with the wind, as they scored a goal in the first minute and led by 2-2 to 0-2 at half time. Sweeney’s penalty for Skibbereen was tipped over the crossbar by Bandon goalkeeper, O’Neill. Rossa’s made a good start to the second half with a point but missed numerous scores subsequently. Tom Bowne’s two goals for Bandon finished the game as a contest.

Best for Bandon were T. Browne, J. J. McCarthy, J. Walsh and S. Crowley while G. Carey, T. Connell, P. Carey and S. McSweeney tried hard for Skibbereen.

     Referee – T. O’Regan, Clonakilty.

Semi-final  -   Clonakilty  0-8   Bantry Blues 0-2      May 23rd  in Skibbereen

Clonakilty created a surprise when they proved too strong for the Blues in the Marsh. Playing with the wind, Clon dominated the first half, leading by 0-5 to 0-1 at the break. Walley (3) and Harte (2) had the Clon points while Bantry’s sole point came from D. McCarthy.

Bantry were expected to make a big challenge in the second half but they were thwarted by a very strong Clon defence, backboned superbly by their new player, the Kerry bank clerk, Tom Moriarty. Clon actually outscored the Blues by 0-3 to 0-1 in the second half. Final score was 0-8 to 0-2.

     Referee – Con O’Leary, Skibbereen.

SOUTH-WEST JUNIOR A FOOTBALL FINAL 1948

August 29th        in Enniskean

Clonakilty Juniors 1-5        Bandon 1-2

Played in front of a large crowd, this was a dour, unspectacular game. Clon played with a slight breeze in the first half and led at the break by 0-4 to 0-1. Both teams added a goal and a point to their totals in the second half and Bandon applied a lot of pressure towards the end but were unable to secure an equalising goal.

Referee: Gus Keohane, St. Mary’s, Enniskean.

County Championship

Clonakilty met Beara champions, Garnish, in the county championship in Bantry on September 12th but had to field without some players who had been promoted to the senior team. It was the depleted Clon side which started brightly in the first quarter but as soon as the Garnish men found their feet, there was going to be only one winner. Final score was 2-8 to 0-3 in favour of Garnish. Best for Clon were T. O’Regan, Skinner and O’Neill.

Garnish lost to Canovee in the semi-final.
