Courcey Rovers 4-7    Ballineen 3-3

       The final of the South-West Cork Junior Hurling Championship was at Bandon on a recent Sunday between Courcey Rovers and Ballineen. Weather conditions were ideal and there was a fairly large attendance of spectators.

       With the advantage of a strong breeze, Courcey Rovers completely dominated the exchanges in the first half and led at the interval by two goals and six points to nil.

      The issue then seemed a foregone conclusion but Ballineen made a great effort on resuming and though they could not manage to get on terms, they succeeded in bringing a lot of life into the game.

          They registered three goals and three points and with Courcey Rovers putting in two more goals and a point, the final score was:-

         Courcey Rovers  -  4 goals 7 points.

         Ballineen  -  3 goals 3 points.

         Mr. . Crowley, Bandon H.C. and F.C. was the referee.

        The winners were well served by Murphy, O’Sullivan, Nolan and Scott, while Hurley and Cantwell were prominent for the losers.

       At the end of the game, Mr. Seán Lomasney, O.G., chairman of the South Cork Divisional G.A.A., presented the cup to the captain of the winning team.

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Courcey Rovers met Ballinhassig in the county championship in the Kinsale Athletic grounds on October 4th.  A poor first half saw Courceys failing to score and trailing by 2-2 to nil at the break. A good third quarter closed the gap but on a final score of 2-5 to 1-1, Courceys were out of the championship. Scorers for Courceys were G. Donovan, a goal from a free, and M. Nolan, a point. Best on the day were Donovan, Nolan, H. Sullivan and J. Keohane.

LEAGUE FINAL

The South-West leagues were re-organised in 1953 and Courcey Rovers and Kilbrittain met in the Junior A hurling league final in Bandon, fighting a great battle, during which “the exchanges were of a rather robust character.” Kilbrittain had the better of the first half but were only level at the break, 1-2 each. Courceys dominated the second half but had to fight hard to register a 3-3 to 2-2 victory, to complete the championship/league double.

      “Prominent for the winners were D. Sullivan, T. Scott, M. Nolan and G. Donovan, with E. Ahern, K. Manning and J. Brown doing best for Kilbrittain.”

 

SOUTH-WEST JUNIOR A HURLING DRAWS

The Junior A hurling draws for 1953 were as follows – Clonakilty v Dohenys, Courcey Rovers v O’Donovan Rossa, Ballydehob v Barryroe, Ballineen v Kilbrittain, Ballinascarthy v Bandon. Bantry a bye.

       Reigning champions, Clonakilty, were knocked out in the second round when they surprisingly lost to Bantry, who were getting revenge for the final defeat the previous year. However, Bantry were later beaten in the semi-final by eventual champions, Courcey Rovers, 3-5 to 1-2 in Clonakilty, in a match refereed by Tadhgo Crowley.

BARRYROE WIN JUNIOR B

Barryroe won the junior B  hurling title when they beat Dohenys in the final in Clonakilty on the same day as the junior A final, September 6th. Barryroe led by 1-5 to 1-1 at the break and added four goals in the second half to win by 5-5 to 1-4.
