HURLING

Last Sunday’s contest at Mr. Bernard’s grounds between Kilbrittain, West Cork champions, and Knockavilla, for the West Cork junior hurling final, was most disappointing to all lovers of the game. After twenty minutes’ play it was altogether a one-sided affair, and Kilbrittain eventually won by the big margin of seven goals to one goal and one point for Knockavilla.

Mr. J. Young refereed in a satisfactory and painstaking manner.

SW JUNIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP 1927

Round 1 - Kilbrittain 7-1 Skibbereen 0-1, March 20^th in Clonakilty

A fairly large crowd saw Kilbrittain leading by 3-1 to 0-1 at the break and the final score was 7-1 to 0-1. Skibbereen tried hard but were well out-hurled by the Kilbrittain men. Gate receipts £2 7s 6d.

Round 1 – Clonakilty 3-4 Ballineen 3-1, March 27^th in Ballineen

Though defeated, Ballineen played very well against the experienced Clonakilty team. Ballineen led early on by 2-0 to 0-1, and looked like creating a surprise, with Clon equalising by half time, 2-0 to 1-3. Driscoll and Collins starred in the Clon defence, with Murphy and Regan prominent at midfield and Gull Leahy on the wing was unbeatable. Clon started the second half with two points but Ballineen hit the front with a goal. The Ballineen goalkeeper was the hero as the Ballineen defence kept Clon at bay but the pressure finally told with the Clon side scraping through by 3-4 to 3-1. Keohane and Connolly starred for Ballineen. Gate receipts £2 8s 9d.

Round 1 – Knockavilla 7-6 Belgooly 1-0, Sunday March 20^th in Athletic Grounds, Kinsale.

Knockavilla proved far too good for newcomers, Belgooly, and led by 3 goals and 2 points at half time.

“Belhooly, who are a new team, collapsed completely, and the exhibition was one-sided all through.

Joe Murphy, Kinsale, was the referee. Gate receipts £3 8s 0d.

Semi-final - Kilbrittain 1-1 Clonakilty 0-1, May 1^st at Barryroe

On a bitterly cold May Day, Clonakilty led at the break by a single point to nil in a tough, hard encounter. Ten minutes from time Kilbrittain broke through for the vital goal. The final low score of 1-1 to 0-1 was due to the terrible ground conditions with the surface full of holes and totally unsuited to hurling. In the last five minutes luck was against the Clonakilty men when midfielder, Jer “Gull” Leahy, struck the crossbar with a piledriver and a Clon forward, with the goal at his mercy, tripped in a hole and fell on the ball.

Referee was Michael Minihan, Barryroe.

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Kilbrittain met St. Finbarrs’ junior team in the county semi-final and were rank outsiders on the day but surprised everybody by recording a huge victory.

Kilbrittain advanced to the county final against Ballincollig, played in Bandon on March 11^th, 1928. The attendance was disappointingly small for a county final and Kilbrittain seemed well on their way to their first county title when they led by 3-1 to 1-0 at half time. However, against the wind in the second half, they failed to score and Ballincollig registered three more goals to emerge winners by 4-0 to 3-1. It was county final heartbreak for the second time in twelve months for the Black and Amber.
