SW Junior Football Championship1927

Round 1 -  Innishannon 1-2  Clonakilty 1-1, April 3rd in Bandon

Clon had the first point by Hurley, but a goal by Russell and a point by Murphy put Innishannon ahead. Some fast and exciting play saw Clon equalising with a Collins’ goal before half time, 1-1 each.

Clonakilty restarted well with Hurley “Grey” forcing a good save from the Innishannon goalie. Innishannon pressed a great deal but couldn’t beat the Clon defence until, in the closing minutes, Horgan kicked the winning point. Horgan, Murphy and Russell were best for Innishannon.

Round 1  -  Barryroe 2-3   Enniskean 0-1, April 10th in Kilbrittain

A large crowd saw Barryroe using their weight advantage to good effect.

Referee was Con Crowley, Kilbrittain.

Semi-final -  Innishannon 2-2  Bandon 0-1   June 19th in Knockavilla

Bandon’s defeat by their neighbours didn’t go down well with some people in the town.

“Interest in Gaelic events in Bandon seems a dead letter especially when a team from the village some four miles distant can whack us as they did. The excuse that the defeated team was only a scrap one will not suffice to wipe out the stigma.” (“Bandon Notes”)

Semi-final  -   Dohenys 4-3   Barryroe 1-1 ,  June 19th  in Clonakilty

Barryroe were back in the championship after a long absence and, as in olden times, their team featured some big, strong players. However, they couldn’t match the skill of the more scientific Doheny fifteen, for whom Ned Young was the best forward on the field, with John Dullea also outstanding in attack. Kelly, Whelton and Walsh also contributed to the scoring, while Coakley was the mainstay of a defence in which the novice goalkeeper did very well. Dohenys were without four of their best players.

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Dohenys met the new Beara champions, Urhan, in the county championship in Bantry and before the game started, they objected to the referee as regards the size of the pitch. Urhan won the game on a score of 1-3 to 0-1 and Dohenys subsequently sent the objection as regards the pitch to the County Board. The objection was ruled out as the referee had not reported the matter to the Board.

Urhan went on to the county final where they met Newmarket on March 4th, 1928.  Amazingly, that game was played in Killarney and Urhan brought the first county title back to Beara on a score of 1-6 to 1-0.

SOUTH-WEST JUNIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Dohenys completed the championship/league double when they beat Clonakilty in the final of the league in Clonakilty.

=====================================================

Have you marvelled at the daring,

The feats of skill you see.

Have you wondered as they crash and sway and fall?

Yet, they're up again and going,

Hear the thousands shout in glee,

It takes a man to play it after all."
