SOUTH-WEST CONVENTION

     The convention was held in Bernard’s Hotel, Dunmanway on January 6th.  Officers elected were: chairman - Liam Deasy (Kilmeen): vice-chairman - Dan O’Hea (Kilbrittain): secretary – J. Keohane (  ): treasurer – J.J. Whelan (Bandon).

     Seán McCarthy, chairman of Co. Board and Tom Long, treasurer, addressed the meeting.

 

Bandon GAA Club

The AGM of the Bandon Club was held on March 2nd. President,  Mr Whelan; secretary, Mr Mehigan; treasurer, T. O’Mahony.

       Humphrey O’Leary, the Bandon intercounty player, transferred to new teachers’ team, Na Deasúnaigh, against whom Bandob played a challenge match in February.

      Séamus (J) Whelan, a native of Mitchelstown,  who had been club secretary for four years and also divisional treasurer, left the   Munster and Leinster Bank in Bandon on transfer to Castletownbere. He had played football with Bandon and was a big loss to the club.

 

South-West Junior Football Draws 1929

Skibbereen v Bantry, Baltimore v Leap/ Myross, Valley Rovers v Barryroe , Carbery Rangers v Durrus, Clonakilty v Ardfield. Bandon a bye.

 

SW Junior A Football Championship  1929

Clonakilty beat Ardfield by 2-3  to 0-1    May 12th

Skibbereen and Bantry 2nds drew after extra time,  May 12th in Durrus

Leap/Myross United  0-5  Baltimore 0-2    May 19th in Skibbereen

A large crowd attended in ideal weather and the game was a dour battle. Baltimore ’Black and Whites’  had a good Kerry player, Rice, who kicked two points as Collins replied. Half time saw Baltimore leading by 0-2 to 0-1. Fortune equalised and Collins kicked a lead point. Baltimore pressed hard but failed to score. Leap had a goal disallowed but Leahy and Neill added  points.

      Baltimore subsequently lodged an objection and a replay was ordered. 

 

Replay – Leap/Myross United 3-5  Baltimore 0-3   July 7th  in  Skibbereen.  

Myross wore black and white while Baltimore wore green and yellow, both teams having new players from the drawn game. About 400 people attended.  Playing with the breeze Myross/Leap led at half time by 1-4 to nil, the scores coming from Donovan, 1-2, Keegan and Fortune. Baltimore responded well in the third quarter and had their supporters cheering with three points in a row. However, they failed to score again as Myross/Leap went on to add 2-1 in the last quarter. Referee, Ml. Gallagher N.T., Durrus.  

 

Carbery Rgs 1-2   Durrus 1-1   May 26th in Union Hall

Durrus, composed mainly of Schull players from the previous year, also had players from Dunbeacon and Ballydehob. The  day was showery and cold but a brilliant game of football ensued. Durrus missed some frees. Rangers’ Moloney kicked a point and it was thrilling football as a Kelleher goal for Durrus was followed by point from M. McCarthy. C. McCarthyhad the final say of the half with a point for Rangers. At half time Durrus led by 1-1 to 0-2. Only one score was registered in the second half, a goal for Rangers by M. Keeffe. Best for Rangers were C. Hurley, T. Moloney, D and J Regan, C. McCarthy, M. Keeffe and C. Dempsey. Best for Durrus were D and J. McCarthy, J. Donoghue and C. Downing.         Referee, J. Burke, Union Hall.

During the game Ross had player sent off, but he refused to go. The referee subsequently awarded the game to Durrus.

 

Replay Bantry 2nds  3-4  Skibbereen 0-1  June 16th  in Durrus

Goals by Keane saw Bantry lead by 2-3 to nil at half time. McCarthy had a goal in the second half. P. O’Sullivan, a teenager from Bantry was the best player on pitch.   

 

Barryroe 0-2   Innishannon 0-1  June 30th  in  Bandon

Bantry 2nds 3-4   Durrus 0-2    July 14th  in Bantry.

Keyes, Keohane, McCarthy and Murphy were scorers for Bantry, with Brennan, Murphy and Vaughan on top in defence.

 

Bandon 1-2    Leap/Myross United 0-1,  July 28th at Kilmeen

In poor weather on a sodden pitch, Myross played with the wind, A Willie Fortune point was the only score in first half. In the second half Bandon took control with Ned Murphy scoring a point and Murphy a goal. A second  Bandon  point sealed the issue. It was not agreat game because of conditions. Best for Bandon were Pat Joe Driscoll, McCarthy, Ned Murphy. Best for Myross were Willie and Paddy Fortune (goalie), Casey and Burke.

       Leap/Myross objected on the grounds that full time had not been played but the objection was not upheld by County Board. 

 

Semi final:  Bantry 2-2   Bandon 0-2,  September 22nd  in Clonakilty  

In glorious conditions in Clon a big crowd  watched a poor game . The Clonakilty Brass Band and the Bandon Pipe Band both attended.  The scores from the All-Ireland final, Kerry v Kildare, were relayed to the crowd. A  big scoreboard was also on view and Fr. Carroll, Kilmeen, threw in the ball. Lar Shea of Clonakilty was the referee. Daly, Kingston and Canniffe were best for Bandon. The scores were level at half time, 0-1 each. Bantry kicked a goal early in the second half and Sullivan had a point from a free as the Blues took control. Bandon missed numerous scores.  

     Bandon subsequently objected and Bantry counter-objected. The SW Board ruled in favour of Bantry as the Bandon objection was not in order but the clubs agreed to a replay.   

 

Replay  -  Bandon 1-1  Bantry 0-1   November 3rd   in Bantry

Bandon led by 1-1 to nil at half time, having played against the slope. Bantry pressed in the second half but only registered one point because of the solid display of the Bandon backs, especially the goalkeeper, who was frequently applauded .  A fine game was marred by too many fouls.

 

Semi-final:   Clonakilty received walkover from Barryroe.

SOUTH-WEST JUNIOR A FOOTBALL FINAL  1929

 December 8th    in   Innishannon

 Bandon 1-1      Clonakilty  0-3

Played in miserable weather conditions with a gale blowing across the pitch. The pitch itself was enclosed and the goals were netted.

      The referee was D. Russell, Valley Rovers and  Michael Minihane, the Divisional secretary, threw in the ball. Play was confined to one part of the pitch because of the gale but both teams actually played better against the wind,

       Bandon had better combination and ball control and, with the wind in first half,  O’Neill got a Bandon point from an angled free  and then Gorman scored a soft goal from 40 yards. The half time score was 1-1 to nil.  Clonakilty goalkeeper, Harte, brought off some fine saves. 

       Bandon played better against the wind in second half. Clon scored a point and Leahy added a second. Clon launched waves of attacks but were repelled by a solid Bandon defence. Clon scored a third point but couldn’t get the equaliser, one goal chance scraping the post. Daly, Clon, retired injured, replaced by Hussey.

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

       Bandon had been nominated to represent the division and beat the Beara junior team by 2-4 to 1-0 in the county championship.  They then met East Cork winners, Sarsfields, who had beaten Midleton in a replayed East final by 1-1 to 0-2. In the Athletic Grounds on March 30th, rain lashed down as Bandon proved by far the better side, leading by 2-0 to nil at half time and winning by 4-1 to nil.

COUNTY JUNIOR A FOOTBALL FINAL  1929

 April 13th, 1930,    in   Dunmanway

        Bandon  1-3   Iveleary 0-0

       Bandon  met Muskerry champions,  Iveleary, in the county final at Dunmanway on April 13th. Iveleary had beaten Ballincollig in the Muskerry final and accounted for Crosshaven in the county championship. The game was played in Bernard’s field, near the railway station, and the pitch was staked and wired for the game. The local Fife and drum Band played the teams to the field and the ball was thrown in by Rev. Fr. O’Sullivan. The referee was Jack  Young, N.T. A diagonal gale of wind and heavy showers affected the football. “Playing with splendid precision and dash,Bandon scored a point, followed by a goal. Iveleary attacked but lack of penetration saw them failing to score. The score at half time was 1-1 to nil.

    In the second half Bandon added two points and Iveleary seemed to lose heart against their more scientific opponents.   

      On a score of 1-3 to nil, Bandon completed the SW and county doubles, football and hurling.

     Best for the winners were the O’Driscolls, O’Neill, O’Gorman and, particularly, Jack Lynch.
