SW Junior A Football Championship 1933 

Round 1:  Enniskeane 2-2   Darrara Nil     March 19^th in Enniskeane

The attendance was very small. Enniskeane with the wind and had a goal and a point from full forward, Gus Keohane, the newly-elected rúnaí of the SW Board. N. Warren, a goal, and Griffin, a point, finished the first-half scoring, 2-2 to nil, and there was no score in the second half, which was marred by sleet and rain. N. Warren, J. Hurley, J. Hodge and goalkeeper, C. Donovan were rock-solid in the Enniskeane defence while J. Mahony (goalkeeper), T. McCarthy, P. Verling and Hayes did well for Darrara.

 

Farnivane 1-0  Durrus 0-2    April 2^nd  in Drimoleague

The standard was poor as both sides lacked accuracy and training. Farnivane scored a goal after ten minutes, which proved to be the winning score. It was 1-0 to 0-1 at half time. Durrus dominated the third quarter, scoring another point, but could not get an equaliser, the Farnivane goalkeeper being in excellent form.

     The game was ordered to be replayed.

 

Round 1  -  Lissroe 2-0  Carbery Rangers 0-2     April 9^th   in Clonakilty

Although Lissroe dominated the first half, it was Rangers who led at half time by 0-1 to nil. Rangers got on top in the third quarter and added another point, from Courcey. Rangers looked likely winners entering the last quarter but in the space of two minutes, Lissroe struck for two goals, from Goggin and Hayes. They withstood a lot of pressure in the closing stages to emerge winners by 2-0 to 0-2. 

 

Round 1 -  Rosscarbery 1-2   Enniskeane 1-0   April 23^rd  in Clonakilty

A very interesting game, in doubt right up to the last whistle. For over forty minutes there was only one score in the game, a rushed Enniskeane goal.  The last twenty minutes belonged to Carbery Rangers  who launched a good comeback.

Hayes, Fortune, Regan and Donovan were prominent in the Ross defence as Enniskeane applied a lot of pressure with the wind in the first half. Fortune and Regan went into the attack in the second half and made a big difference. A goal by Fortune was decisive and they added two points to emerge winners.  (teams) .

 

Round 1  -  Barryroe 1-3  Kilbrittain 1-2    April 23^rd  in Barryroe

Playing with the wind, Kilbrittain led at the break by 1-1 to 0-1, the goal coming from D. Wynne. Barryroe’s play improved immensely in the second half with the wind and M. Foley became the hero of the hour when he scored the equalising goal and then kicked the winning point. Finn, Cahalane, Foley, McCarthy and Donovan were best for the winners, while E. O’Hea, Wynne, Crowley, Dolly and Lannin tried hard for Kilbrittain.

Round 2  -  Skibbereen 3-5   Lissroe Nil   May 7^th in Rosscarbery

The ball was thrown in by Fred Calnan, son of the legendary Fred Calnan of Rosscarbery and Cork fame. Although Moxley (goal), T. Hayes, P. Tobin, T. Santry and J. Fitzpatrick defended well for Lisroe, they were under constant pressure from the Skibb men. Three goals by Cottam  plus points from M. Walsh, 3, and McCarthy gave Skibb a half time lead of 3-4 to nil and  Walsh scored the only point of the second half. T. Regan (capt..), D. Geaney, Fitzsimons and T. McCarthy all did well in the Skibb attack.

 

Round 1  -  Durrus 3-3  Farnivane 1-1   May 7^th  in Dunmanway

Gallagher, captain, had an early goal for Durrus on a wet, sodden pitch. He scored a second which was disallowed as there was a Durrus man in the square. A long-range goal by Crowley gave Durrus a half time lead of 2-1 to nil. In the third quarter Durrus ensured victory with a goal and two points before Farnivane staged a late comeback, kicking a goal, but fumbling a lot of chances.

 

Round 2  -  Enniskean 1-2  Glengarriff 0-4   May 21^st  in Dunmanway

In front of a large crowd in perfect weather, the match was fast and keenly contested. Each side managed a single point in the first half. Glengarriff  led by two points early in the second half before Enniskeane kicked the only goal of the game. Glegarriff equalised but Enniskeane had the winning point late in the game. Jack Lynch refereed.

 

Round 2  -  Barryroe 6-5  Durrus 4-3   May 28^th in Skibbereen

The game provided a glut of goals despite fine performances from the two goalkeepers. Among the goalscorers were Michael Minihane, Barryroe, treasurer of the SW Board, and Michael Gallagher, Durrus, captain of the Carbery football team.

 

Round 2  -  Bantry Juniors 4-3   ClonakiltyJuniors  1-2   July 23^rd  in Skibbereen

Clonakilty, playing with the breeze, led by 1-1 to 1-0 but Bantry added two goals in the second quarter to lead by 3-0 to 1-2 at the break. Bantry dominated the second half, scoring 1-3, while Clon failed to score. Final score was 3-4 to 1-2. With T. Regan as referee.

 

Semi-final  -  Enniskeane 2-3  Barryroe 2-3   July 23^rd in Bandon

The standard was not very high but some good patches of football were seen. Barryroe led by 1-2 at half time and looked likely winners in the second half. However, Enniskeane put in a strong finish to draw level. Referee, Red Crowley, Bandon H.C.

 

Semi-final  -  Skibbereen 2-4  Bantry Nil  August 6^th  in Drimoleague

Skibbereen dominated from the start but missed numerous opportunities. Star of the game was Tim Regan, captain, at full forward, who accounted for most of the scores. Gerald McCarthy did Trojan work at midfield and the Skibb team was well on top all through. Ned Forbes, Drimoleague, referee.   

 

Semi-final Replay  -  Enniskeane 4-2   Barryroe 2-4   August 13^th in Bandon

This was a much better game than the drawn encounter. Enniskeane led with two goals from Humphrey Howe but Barryroe responded when McCarthy beat the Enniskeane goalkeeper with a good ground shot, plus points from Hennessy and Moriarty. It was Enniskeane in front at half time on a score of 2-2 to 1-2. Hennessy pointed on the resumption but back came Howe to complete his hat-trick. Shorten made sure of the win with a fourth goal while Barryroe finished with a goal from McCarthy. Final score was 4-2 to 2-4 and the referee was P.J. Downing of Bandon. (teams).

 SOUTH-WEST JUNIOR A FOOTBALL FINAL  1933

August 27^th    in Clonakilty    

Skibbereen  0-4    Enniskeane  0-3

Skibbereen were playing their first final since 1924 when they won the county intermediate title, while Enniskeane were playing their first-ever final. The Skibb hurlers had also reached the SW final in defence of their title, so the Reds were going for the double. A special excursion train brought the Skibb supporters to Clonakilty. Amazingly, the final was played at the same time as the Carbery footballers were playing Beara in the county championship, a game Carbery lost by three points.

     The slippery conditions owing to heavy rain the previous night and all that morning spoiled this final but the closeness of the scoring and the even balance of the two teams kept the spectators on their toes. Enniskeane played with the wind and applied a lot of early pressure, Keohane opening the scoring with a point.

      Skibbereen then took control and a shot from McCarthy struck the post, hopped on the crossbar and came back into play. A few minutes later the same player equalised and the score at half time stood at 0-1 each.

     With the wind in the second half Skibb took control and a point from McCarthy put them into the lead. Enniskeane, however, were showing great spirit and forced a great save from the Skibb goalkeeper, sailor Kelly. There was nothing between the sides in the last quarter as Skibb held onto their point lead and although Eniiskeane tried very hard, they failed to overtake their opponents. Final score was 0-4 to 0-3 in favour of Skibbereen. The referee was Dan ‘Taylor’ O’Donovan of Clonakilty.

Objection

Following the final Enniskeane objected to the composition of the Skibbereen team. The objection was read at the Board meeting on Friday, September 8^th in Dunmanway. Unfortunately, not enough neutral delegates were present at the meeting to hear the objection and the chairman, Seán O’Sullivan, suggested that they should avoid the hassle of an objection and replay the final. Although many objections were lodged at the time very few were actually heard, the simple solution of a replay being agreed to.

     However, Skibbereen delegate, said Skibbereen would prefer to have the objection properly heard and if they had done anything outside the rules, then they should be punished for it. He did not agree with all objections resulting in replays as some side must be at fault.

    The chairman again appealed that the game should be replayed as the division would have to nominate a team for the county championship. Eventually, both sides agreed to a replay, in Skibbereen on October 1^st, with Tim Harrington of Bantry as referee. He would be allowed to provide his own umpires. It was also agreed that Skibbereen should represent the division in the county.

SOUTH-WEST JUNIOR A FOOTBALL FINAL REPLAY  1933

October 1^st      in  Town Park, Skibbereen

Enniskeane 1-5    Skibbereen 2-1

    In splendid weather conditions a large crowd watched another evenly-contested game. Skibbereen, who had won the hurling final the previous Sunday, opened the scoring with a goal from C. McCarthy after only six minutes and Enniskeane answered with a point from Keohane. Tim O’Regan added to Skibb’s account with a point and a few minutes later Keohane levelled the game with a goal from a free. The same player converted two

frees in a short time and Hennessy closed the first-half scoring with a point to leave Enniskeane leading by 1-4 to 1-1 at the break.

     Another Keohane point stretched the lead to four points in a lively opening to the second half but the arrival of P. Fortune (Glandore) as a sub for Skibbereen saw a change in fortunes and when the Glandore man netted, the lead was down to the minimum. From then to the end play was lively as Skibbereen sought the levelling point. However, they were out of luck and only a few wides were registered as Enniskeane hung on to win by a single point, 1-5 to 2-1. Only two scores were kicked during the second half. Referee was Tim Harrington, the renowned Bantry footballer.

    The Skibbereen CYMS Band provided the musical entertainment. This was Enniskeane’s first-ever title.

Enniskeane were beaten in the county championship by Urhan, who were later proved to be illegal.
