Darrara’s first final

South-West Junior Football Draws 1934
There were eighteen affiliated clubs in the division in 1934, with established clubs, Dohenys and Kilbrittain, failing to affiliate for the year.
There was a fall of four in the number of teams participating in the Junior A football championship from the previous year, eleven teams taking part. The draw resulted as – Skibbereen v Barryroe, Timoleague v Enniskeane, Bantry v Scarth, Bandon v Clonakilty, Barley Hill v Ballinspittal, Darrara College a bye.
Unfortunately, coverage of Gaelic games in Carbery in 1934 was poor, possibly due to the turbulent political situation involving the Blueshirts, who actually tried, unsuccessfully to set up a rival Gaelic games association in West Cork during the year. We are dependent on the Southern Star in the main for newspaper coverage but copies of that newspaper from June to November are unavailable.
SW Junior A Football Championship 1934
Round 1 - Barley Hill 2-2 Ballinspittal Nil April 22nd in Darrara
High winds and cold showers spoiled the game but Barley Hill were easily the better side. Goals by Harrington and Burns gave Barley Hill a good lead at half time, playing with the wind. In the second half Ballinspittal tried hard but Hayes, Daly and Cunningham excelled in the Barley Hill defence. The goalkeeper also brought off some great saves.
Round 2 - Bantry v Clon
Round 2 - Barley Hill v Darrara
Round 2 - Skibbereen 3-2 Enniskean 1-5 June 10th in Bantry
Play was not up to standard in the first half after which Skibb led by 1-2 to 0-1. Both teams showed better combination in the second half, Skibb emerging winners by 3-2 to 1-5. The reigning champions were out of the championship.
Objection
Enniskeane must have objected to Skibbereen subsequently as it was Enniskeane who advanced to the SW final.
SOUTH-WEST JUNIOR A FOOTBALL FINAL 1934
August 26th in Bandon
Enniskean 1-0 Darrara College 1-0
Darrara were contesting their first-ever final, against reigning champions, Enniskeane. As Dohenys had no team in 1934, a number of their players lined out with Enniskeane, including Carbery players Liam Grainger, Willie Farr and Dee O’Mahony. The display of football was only mediocre with both sets of backs well on top throughout the game. Enniskeane seemed to have the slightly better forwards.
The first score fell to Darrara after about fifteen minutes when Beasley got possession and beat the goalkeeper who rushed out to block him. Enniskeane had several wides after that until the Doheny pair, Farr and Grainger, combined for the latter to rattle the net before half time.
Enniskeane did most of the pressing in the second half but found the Darrara defence too strong to break down. When Darrara did manage to attack, they found Warren in splendid form at the heart of the Enniskeane defence. Both sides missed chances and when the final whistle sounded no score had been registered in the second half. Final score was 1-0 each.

SOUTH-WEST JUNIOR A FOOTBALL FINAL REPLAY 1934
September 9th in Darrara
Enniskeane 0-2 Darrara 0-1
There was a fair attendance and much interest was taken in this replay on Darrara’s own ground. Gus Keohane, divisional secretary, had taken over as captain of the Enniskeane side. Playing with the breeze, Enniskeane dominated and after eight minutes took the lead with a Gus Keohane free. Darrara narrowly missed a goal, the ball going inches wide, before Mick Finn, later to earn fame with Clonakilty and Cork levelled from a sixty yard free. Finn was renowned for his prodigious kicking of the ball. Darrara did a lot of attacking before half time but the Enniskeane defence held steady. It was a point each at half time in another game dominated by defences.
Darrara, with the breeze, did most of the pressing in the second half but failed to raise a flag. Seven minutes from time Enniskeane took up the attack and D. O’Mahony kicked the winning point from a close-in free.
Final score was 0-2 to 0-1 in favour of the reigning champions but it must have been the only SW final won without a single score from play.
