South-West Junior Football Draws 1938

A new team, Lowertown, from near Schull, entered the junior A football championship in 1938 but missing from the draw was Skibbereen. The draw resulted as Enniskeane v Drimoleague, Barryroe v Lowertown, Bandon v Doheny Jnrs, Clonakilty Jnrs v Carbery Rangers, Schull v Bantry Jnrs.

SW Junior A Football Championship 1938

Round 1  -  Enniskean 1-5   Drimoleague 0-1     April 24th  in Dunmanway

Strange to say Drimoleague enjoyed more scoring opportunities than the winners but faulty shooting and lack of pace and judgement cost them dearly. A poor game was marred by over-strenuous play, plus one regrettable scene. Enniskean were the better-balanced side but O’Regan of Drimoleague was the best player on the pitch. An early goal by O’Brien gave Enniskean a lead of 1-2 to 0-1 at half time and a bad-tempered second half produced only three points for the winners. Referee, Robert Buttimer, Dohenys.

Rúnaí resigns

Drimoleague objected to Enniskean on the grounds that the Enniskean men had fielded an illegal player. The Board upheld the objection and awarded the game to Drimoleague. However, the rúnaí, Gus Keohane, a member of the Enniskean  team, then resigned as rúnaí of the Board as it would not be legal for him to remain as rúnaí if his team was declared illegal. The Enniskean delegate indicated that his club would appeal the decision to the County Board.

Eventually, it was Enniskean who went through to Round 2 and Gus Keohane withdrew his resignation.

Round 1  -  Doheny Jnrs 4-1   Bandon 0-1   May 1st in Enniskean

A heavier and stronger Bandon outfit started favourites against Dohenys’ second string but once again inaccuracy was to prove the downfall of the losing team. At no time did the standard reach championship level and Dohenys led by 1-1 to nil at the small whistle. The second half saw Dohenys adding three goals to Bandon’s solitary point. Goal-scorers for Dohenys were D. McCarthy, Nyhan, Ross and Crowley. O’Brien scored Bandon’s only point. Referee, Gus Keohane, Board rúnaí.

Round 1  -    Schull 2-3   Bantry Jnrs 0-1   May 8th in Skibbereen

Newcomers, Schull, created a major surprise when they accounted for an experienced Bantry outfit in the first round. While both teams showed a lack of training, the Schull forwards looked much sharper in front of goal. Points from M. Hanley and M. Barnett for the winners were followed by a goal from J. Dwyer as they led by 1-2 to 0-1 at the break. A goal by J. Hunt finished the game as a contest in the second half. Referee, Tim O’Regan, Skibbereen.

Round 1  -  Barryroe beat Lowertown at Rosscarbery

There is no account available for this game but when the referee reported that Barryroe were late for the game, the Board awarded the game to Lowertown. However, Lowertown agreed to replay the game.

Round 1 Replay  -  Barryroe 2-5  Lowertown 0-2    June 19th in Skibbereen

The game was replayed in Skibbereen on June 19th and Barryroe again proved far too strong, leading by 2-2 to 0-1 at half time and by 2-5 to 0-2 at the finish. Referee, Tim O’Regan, Skibbereen.

Round 1  -  Carbery Rangers 2-7  Clonakilty 0-1    May 15th  1938

Round 2  -  Enniskean 5-3   Barryroe 0-1    July 24th  in Bandon

This was totally one-sided contest with Barryroe being outclassed all through. With John Warren dominating the game for the winners, Enniskean led by 4-3 to nil at half time, despite playing against the wind. Warren was the scoring hero and got great assistance from T. Vaughan, Jerry O’Brien, Collins, “Tiger” Murray, Howe, Hennessy and Hurley. For Barryroe T. McCarthy caught the eye, along with J. Madden, J. O’Mahony, O’Sullivan and O’Brien. Referee, Paddy Downing, Bandon.

Carbery Rangers v Clonakilty Juniors: Round 1 South-West Junior A Football Championship 1938

Semi-final  -  Enniskean 1-5   Schull 2-1   August 14th  in Skibbereen

Schull proved that their good form against Bantry’s was no fluke when they ran the experienced Enniskean to a single point. In fact, with a quarter of an hour remaining, Schull looked the likely winners as they deservedly led by four points.   It took a great rally from Enniskean, “a long-standing and battle-scarred combination,” to rescue the game.

The first half was played in a downpour, which didn’t suit Enniskean’s high catching and long kicking, while Schull were better on the ground. The sides were level at half time, Schull 1-0 (by Arundel), Enniskean 0-3. A goal by Hanley put Schull in a great position, four points ahead, but they failed to close out the game and Howe was the Enniskean hero when he kicked the winning point at the death.

    Referee, Rev. J. McCarthy, Rosscarbery.

Semi-final  -  Carbery Rangers 1-3   Doheny Jnrs. 1-0    August 28th  in Clonakilty

For the first time ever in championship football, Carbery Rangers got the better of their great rivals, Dohenys. Ross did a lot of pressing early on but O’Donovan (captain), McCarthy and Crowley repelled all attacks. It was Dohenys in front at the break, 1-0 to nil, when they rushed a goal just before half time. Ross had the breeze in the second half and, after two players had been sent off, they took control of the game, the Sheehan brothers combining to score the decisive goal. A young Eamon Young was one of Dohenys’ best players. Referee, Chris Kiely, Clonakilty.

SOUTH-WEST JUNIOR A FOOTBALL FINAL 1938

September 4th  in Skibbereen

Carbery Rangers 2-2    Enniskean  2-2

Territorially Carbery Rangers should have had this game wrapped up by half time. Playing with the breeze and the slope, they dominated the half but failed when it came to putting scores on the board. A goal from Dan Burke and a point from D. Collins was all they could manage, while John Warren snatched a soft goal for Enniskean just before half time, 1-1 to 1-0.

While   Rosscarbery   played as a team all through, they were a little lax in defence at times. On the other hand, Enniskean played as individuals, with a number of passengers on the side.

“There were, however, four or five players whose football sense was well-developed, and their execution being in keeping, they almost succeeded in carrying the others on their backs to victory.”

With T. Vaughan, G. McCarthy and J. Warren prominent, Enniskean had their best period in the third quarter. Vaughan equalised but J. McCarthy, P. Lane, D. Collins and D. Burke kept them at bay. Burke put Rangers in front again but back came Vaughan to level for Enniskeane and when he converted a penalty, Enniskean were a goal to the good and looking likely winners. Rangers responded with fierce pressure and it was the outstanding trio of Lane, Burke and Collins who combined to produce the levelling goal from Collins. Rangers dominated the closing minutes but failed to secure a winner. It finished 2-2 each.

Referee, Brother Cyril of the De La Salle Brothers, Skibbereen.

     Carbery Rangers: Tom Cahill (capt..), P. Casey, J. Hodnett, D. Regan, J.J. Hayes, M. Donovan, R. Cunningham, D. Mehigan, J. McCarthy, D. Sheehan, P. Lane, D. Collins, D. Burke, P. Sheehan, P. Murray.

      Enniskean: John Warren (captain), Con Warren, Stan Howe, M. Hennessy, D. Collins, D. Murray, T. Vaughan, P. O’Driscoll, K. Donovan, C. Keohane, D. Murray, J. O’Brien, J. Corcoran, G. McCarthy, J. O’Brien, H. O’Neill, C. Noonan.

Semi-final re-fixed

Before the replay of the SW final could take place, an issue arose re the semi-final between Enniskean and Schull, which had been played in Skibbereen, Enniskean winning by a point. At a Board meeting on September 18th it was pointed out that the minutes of the previous meeting were not correct. The Board had agreed that the Enniskean v Schull semi-final would be played in Schull, as Enniskean had agreed to travel there. However, the rúnaí, Gus Keohane, a member of the Enniskean team, had changed the venue to Skibbereen, without consulting anybody on the Board. The rúnaí had no power to change a venue that had been decided by the Board and, accordingly, the semi-final was declared null and void. The game was re-fixed for Bantry on October 2nd, the winners to play Carbery Rangers on the 16th in Dunmanway.

Semi-final  Replay -  Enniskean  1-3   Schull 1-2   October 2nd  in Bantry

The cold, harsh weather kept the crowd down and the game did little to warm them up. A slippery ball and a heavy pitch didn’t help the standard. Playing with the strong wind in the first half Enniskeane failed to play anywhere near form as Schull were the better fielders and showed better teamwork. When Schull led by a goal and a point at half time, the game seemed all over. But for a great performance from the goalkeeper, Enniskeane would have been well beaten but the second half saw a marvellous transformation. With T. Vaughan taking control at midfield, supplying great balls to the forwards, Enniskeane fought back to win by the narrowest of margins, 1-3 to 1-2. Schull had their chances in the second half but the forwards played too far out from goal.

Objection

Schull objected to Enniskean  on the grounds that the Enniskean team was illegally constituted. However, an issue arose over the sending of the objection to the secretary of the SW Board, which would have ruled it out of order. A vote was taken at the Board meeting and it was tied at eight all. The stand-in chairman at the meeting was Liam Grainger, Dohenys, and he gave his casting vote against the objection being heard.

The SW final between Carbery Rangers and Enniskean  had to be postponed because Carbery Rangers, who were representing the Division, were billed to play Adrigole in the county championship.

County Championship

Carbery Rangers met Adrigole in Bantry on October 16th and had an easy win, 3-4 to nil. Too much handpassing was one of the faults laid at Adrigole’s door, as well as too much crowding for the ball. Best for the winners were Dan Burke at midfield, J. Hodnett and Jimmy McCarthy in the forward line, Sheehan and Sullivan. All the scoring was done by Burke, Murray and McCarthy. The referee was Tim Harrington, Bantry. (Teams)

Before the start of the play, two minutes silence was observed in memory of the late Fred Calnan, the old Rosscarbery Gael, whose name was a household world in football circles a quarter of a century before.

REPLAY  -  SOUTH-WEST JUNIOR A FOOTBALL FINAL 1938

October 23rd in Dunmanway

Carbery Rangers 3-5    Enniskean  1-1

There was no doubting the better team in this replay as Carbery Rangers, the heavier, faster,  and better side, scored a comprehensive victory in a good exhibition of football. Playing with the breeze, Enniskeane good off to a good start with the impressive John Warren kicking a goal and a point. Rangers rallied in an exciting second quarter and scored a goal, which closed the gap at half time to a single point, 1-1 to 1-0. P. McCarthy equalised in the third quarter and when P. Murray drove in a goal, Rangers were ahead for the first time. A second goal from Murray secured the victory and it was all Rangers in the closing stages as they registered four more points.

County Semi-final

In the county semi-final Carbery Rangers met Ballincollig in Bandon on November 27th and a thrilling encounter ended all square, Carbery Rangers 0-4, Ballincollig 1-1. The game was a curtain-raiser to the highly controversial county senior final between Clonakilty and St. Nick’s, won by Nick’s. In a fine. sporting game, dictated by the soft conditions, no quarter was asked or given, and it was level at half time, 0-3 to 1-0. Each side managed only a point in the second half. Tom Cahill, Ross captain, was the outstanding player on the pitch, with good support from Burke, McCarthy, Lane, Regan and Donovan. Dan Burke, 2, J. McCarthy and M. Donovan were the Ross scorers.

The replay the following Sunday in Crookstown proved a major disappointment for the Ross men as they were well outplayed, the forwards again taking a lot of the blame. J. McCarthy played well for Ross but some of the other stars failed to produce their top form. Ballincollig led by 1-3 to 0-1 at the break A goal from a free by Dan Burke and a point by J. Hodnett cut the lead to three points but Ballincollig finished stronger to win by four, 1-6 to 1-2 .

Ballincollig lost the county final to Dromtarriffe by 2-4 to 1-1.
