SW Junior A Football Championship

 Round 1  -  St. Mary’s 1-1   Bandon 0-3    March 29th   in Clonakilty

Despite the pouring rain for three-quarters of an hour, this was a keenly contested game and the closeness of the scores kept the supporters on their toes. St. Mary’s were heavier and stronger but Bandon were faster and tackled very well. Lar Cummins pointed for Bandon and McCarthy answered for St. Mary’s. Bandon were adapting well to the conditions but good defending from Kehily, Corcoran, Moriarty and the veteran Howe in goal, kept them at bay until James and Lar Cummins pointed before half time as Bandon led by 0-3 to 0-1.

“Sandy” Driscoll in goal, Ned Crowley, Lane, Seán Crowley and Collins did well for the Lilywhites, with the two army men, Connors and Shanahan dominating midfield. Bandon held their lead all through the second half but disaster struck in the dying minutes when Denis Murray lashed home a winning goal for St. Mary’s. It finished 1-1 to 0-3. The referee was Jim Ahern of Clonakilty.  (teams)

Subsequently, Bandon objected to St. Mary’s on the grounds that the goalkeeper, Humphrey S. Howe, a former Carbery player, had been replaced at half time. At that time players could only be replaced if they were injured. It was stated that Howe had been injured in the first half, breaking three ribs, but had continued to half time. Players could not be replaced during the half time break but the referee had been informed. The objection was lost.

Round 1  -   Bantry Jnrs    Skibbereen Jnrs

Originally scheduled for May 3rd, the game was postponed because the Skibbereen men were finishing a Retreat. No account is available of the replay but Bantry advanced to the second round.

Round 1  -  Drimoleague 2-9  Doheny Jnrs 0-1    May 3rd  in

Reigning champions, Drimoleague, proved too strong for Dohenys junior side, who were missing three or four of their best players. The winners led by 2-4 to 0-1 at the break. The referee was M. O’Mahony of Kilmeen. (teams)

Round 1  -  Carbery Rangers 1-4  Clonakilty Jnrs 1-1   May 3rd  in Cahermore, Rosscarbery.

A large crowd attended the game. Ross played with the wind in the first half and scores from J. McCarthy, Lane and Sheehan gave them a lead of 1-3 to 1-0 at half time. Each side managed only a single point in the second half, Lane again scoring for Ross.  Seán Griffin, N.T., Ardfield, was the referee.

Round 2  -  Schull received walkover from Bantry Jnrs        June 21st  in Skibbereen

Round 3  -  Drimoleague 3-3   Iveagh, Schull 1-2        July 12th  in Bantry

In a game of sparkling football and hard knocks, Drimoleague looked the better team in the first half as the Schull men missed numerous chances. It was the reigning champions in front by 1-1 to 0-1. The fielding was good in the second half and the pace lively, as Drimoleague built up a good lead but the game became too robust with a number of incidents starting from the sideline. Tim Harrington, Bantry, was the referee.

Semi-final  -  Carbery Rangers 1-5   St. Mary’s 0-6   August 2nd  in Clonakilty

Play was of an unusually high standard with tight marking but fine passages of open play.

A goal and a point by Noonan for Ross was answered by points from Kelly, Slyne (2) and Donovan as the Enniskeane men seemed to have the upperhand. Syne and Warren gave St. Mary’s the lead after the restart but for there to the finish Ross were on top, with Murphy and Regan dominating around the middle. McCarthy had two points to level the scoring but the Ross forwards were repulsed repeatedly by a solid Enniskeane defence. However, the pressure told in the dying minutes as O’Keeffe and Lane kicked the winning points, 1-5 to 0-6. The referee was Liam Ahern, Clonakilty.

SOUTH-WEST JUNIOR A FOOTBALL FINAL 1942

September 27th        in  Town Park, Skibbereen

Drimoleague 1-0    Carbery Rangers 0-2

A final won by a single score as reigning champions, Drimoleague retained their title. Despite the wretched weather conditions, a good crowd attended and the teams were played on the field by St. Fachtna’s Silver Band. The pitch and ball were greasy but the kicking and fielding were good. Ross held a two-point lead for most of the game but Drimoleague kicked the vital goal late in the game. Ross pressed hard for an equaliser, missing one great chance of a goal, but Drimoleague held out to retain the title 1-0 to 0-2.

County Championship

Drimoleague met Cork City side, Commercials in the county championship on October 11th and led for most of the game as Commercials missed a lot og scoring chances. Final score was 1-3 to 0-4 in favour of the West Cork champions.

Drimoleague met Macroom in the county semi-final in Dunmanway on November 1st. Defensive lapses cost the West Cork side dearly as they outscored their opponents by five scores to four but two of the Macroom scores were goals. The play was good and exciting all through with the sides level at the break, Drimoleague 1-3, Macroom 2-0. In the second half Drimoleague could only manage a single point, with the Macroom men kicking two. Final result was an unlucky defeat for the West Cork men, 2-2 to 1-4. The referee was Liam Grainger, Dohenys.

It seems that Drimoleague subsequently objected to Macroom as it was the SW champions who advanced to the final.
