JUNIOR HURLING WIN (‘Clonakilty Comments’ )( 20-11-1943)

‘As was expected the junior hurling team disposed of Skibbereen at Burgatia on Sunday last in the final of the South-West Cork Division. Showing excellent form the local players had matters well in hand from the outset. The final score was Clonakilty four goals and four points, Skibbereen one goal and one point. The junior hurlers have thus concluded one of the most successful seasons in the club’s history having defeated some of the leading sides in the division. Their only reverse was in the County Championship when, after a most exciting contest, they were beaten by Glen Rovers. It is to be hoped the upward trend will continue until Clonakilty occupies as leading a position in county hurling as it does in county football.’

BEATEN IN FINAL (‘Seen and Heard  -  Round and about Skibbereen’)(20-11-1943)

‘Skibbereen were beaten by Clonakilty in the final of the South-West Cork Junior Hurling Championship at Rosscarbery on Sunday. The Clonakilty team led throughout and won on the score of 4 goals 4 points to 1 goal 1 point.’

HURLING FINAL (‘Rosscarbery News Items’)(20-11-1943)

Bitterly cold weather and showers of sleet militated against a good display in the South-West Cork Junior Hurling at Burgatia on Sunday, between Clonakilty and Skibbereen. The former, who showed more combination and speed and were helped by the poor finishing of the Skibbereen attack, were deserving winners.’

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

As the SW championship was held up, Clonakilty, who had beaten reigning champions, Kilbrittain, in the semi-final, were nominated to represent the division. They met Glen Rovers’ junior team  in Innishannon. Clon led for most of the first half but the Glen hit the front just before half time, 3-4 to 3-1, and had slightly the better of affairs in the second half, winning by 4-9 to 4-3.

ANNUAL CONVENTION

The SW Annual Convention was held in Bernard’s Hotel, Dunmanway on Sunday, January 23rd, 1944, and the rúnaí, Gus Keohane, reported – “Bandon, Bantry, Carbery Rangers, Clonakilty, Dohenys, Kilbrittain, St. Mary’s, Skibbereen and Timoleague entered for the junior hurling championship (1943). Four of the entrants did not field teams. Skibbereen entered the final without even playing a match. In view of what had happened, he would urge the convention to give the arrangements for the coming championships its serious consideration.  He thought that some form of penalty should be imposed on clubs that failed to field a team. Clonakilty defeated Skibbereen in the final but they were narrowly beaten in the inter-divisional tie later.”

WALKOVERS

No less than eleven walkovers were conceded in the various SW championships in 1943. Skibbereen junior hurlers received a walkover from St. Mary’s in the first round and then got another walkover from Dohenys in the semi-final, thus entering the final without having played a game. In the meantime, Clonakilty had three championship games on the way to the final, beating Timoleague and then drawing with reigning champions, Kilbrittain, and winning the replay. Amazingly, Kilbrittain weren’t to win the SW title again until 1978.

Ollie Walsh

"Life is not a sporting journey - it's a path of labours harsh -

And the prince was called to glory on the dreaded Ides of March;

On his throne the Great Selector has sat down to pick his team -

When prospecting for a goalie, he struck the golden seam.

He picked Mackey, Ring and Langton and Nick Rackard in attack,

Paddy Grace, 'The Link,' Ted Carroll, He selected at the back.

Lory Meagher is there at midfield, Paddy Phelan on the wing -

For the goal He sent for Ollie, sporting Ireland's uncrowned king!"
