SCHULL AND BALLYDEHOB NOTES
“Matches at Enniskeane - A big crowd from this district travelled on Sunday to Enniskeane where Ballydehob juvenile hurlers met Kilbrittain and the Junior team played Courcey Rovers in the divisional final. One of the features of the juvenile game, which Kilbrittain won by a point, was the brilliant goal-keeping of Adrian Markey for Ballydehob. Junior Game – In the junior game, hurling of a very high standard was witnessed. Ballydehob opened promisingly but Courcey Rovers gained a goal lead late in the second half. However, T. Grady equalised with a goal for Ballydehob just on time. Outstanding for the home team were Coughlan, J. Cadogan and T. Vaughan.”
BANTRY and DISTRICT
“Match at Enniskean – Five Bantry players J. Cadogan, J. Butler, T. Foley, P. Sweeney and D. McCarthy were on the Ballydehob team which created a first-class surprise by holding Courcey Rovers to a draw in the final of the South-West Cork Hurling championship at Enniskean on Sunday. The match attracted a big crowd and excitement reached fever pitch at times, particularly in the closing stages.”

REPLAY 1951
Ballydehob 3-5 Courcey Rovers 3-3
September 23rd in Enniskean
(Courcey Rovers won the title on objection)
“Sheer grit and a will to win made Ballydehob the West Cork Junior Hurling Champions on Sunday. They met Courcey Rovers in the replay of the divisional final in Enniskean and although two goals in arrears at half time, fought back with admirable determination to take the title.
Rovers won the toss and, playing with the wind, pressed. Their forwards missed a number of chances but they put up a score of three goals and two points. Ballydehob’s reply was one goal one point.
From the start of the second half Ballydehob pressed and sent to the net twice in rapid succession. Were it not for the sterling defensive of Humphrey Sullivan, they might have got through oftener. His long clean clearances were a treat to watch
Ballydehob had four points and Rovers two before the final whistle when the score was -
Ballydehob - 3 goals 5 points
Courcey Rovers - 3 goals 3 points.
Mr. Gus Keohane, Enniskean, was the referee.
PLAYERS INJURED
Dannie McCarthy, Bantry, who played with Ballydehob, received an injury to the wrist of his right hand and had to retire at half time. His hand was x-rayed at the Mercy Hospital during the week and it was found that the bone above the wrist was fractured.
Tom O’Brien, Drimoleague, who also played with Ballydehob, had to get three stitches in his head, while another player, Ned Leahy, had five teeth broken.

UNEXPECTED RESULTS
Reigning champions, Clonakilty had a good win over Kilbrittain in the first round, 5-2 to 2-2, but a big surprise ensued in the quarter final when they were comprehensively beaten by unfancied St. Mary’s, 4-7 to 2-4. St. Mary’s were then favoured to qualify for the final against Courcey Rovers but it was their turn to be surprised in the semi-final, losing to Ballydehob by 3-5 to 1-2.
BANDON BRIEFLETS (October 27th, Southern Star) (Objections Upheld)
“Objection Succeeds – At a special meeting of the South-West Cork Divisional G.A.A. Committee, held in Enniskean, last week, Bandon were awarded the Junior Football Championship, their objection to the legality of the O’Donovan Rossa F.C. team which beat them in the final, being upheld. Courcey Rovers were awarded the Junior Hurling Championship at the same meeting, their objection to the legality of the Ballydehob team that defeated them in the final being likewise sustained.”
COUNTY BOARD APPEAL
As was the custom at the time, Ballydehob appealed their case to the County Board, held in Cork on Tuesday, October 30th.
“An appeal from Ballydehob H.C., was ruled out of order as the grounds for the appeal were not stated.”

His men to imbue with ideals true, their character to mould;
To love their land, its games so grand, its olden golden fame -
For clear of heart and strong of hand was valiant Captain Lane."
