Dohenys 4-3   Courcey Rovers 3-3

August 31st in Bandon

G.A.A. (‘Bandon Brieflets’ – Southern Star – September 7th)

Under ideal weather conditions at the G.A.A. Stadium, Bandon, Dohenys put paid to Courcey Rovers’ hopes of winning the West Cork Championship for the sixth year in a row, by giving a display of fast, hard hurling which completely puzzled their more seasoned opponents for fifty minutes of the game, thus emulating a feat of the Bandon Club in capturing both titles in the one season. Bandon doubles were in 1929 and again in 1949. Not since 1924 have Dohenys won a West Cork Junior Hurling title.

At the conclusion of the game members of the victorious team were carried shoulder-high from the pitch to the enclosure amidst their cheering and over-joyed large following, the most of whom came by special train.

Dohenys, who had a slight advantage of wind and sun in their favour, were slow to settle down and after a bout of erratic shooting by the Courcey forwards, got a grip on the game and had scores from White, 2 points, O’Driscoll, a point, and a goal from Keane, leaving the scores for the first half – Dohenys 1 goal 3 points, without a reply from the holders.

In the second half they continued on their winning way with further goals from O’Driscoll, Keane and Bernard and were well set for an easy victory. However, the seasoned warriors from De Courcey Parish were not going to let the title pass from them without making a bold fight for it. They then took complete control of the game and scored 3 goals and 3 points but time was against them and the final score was – Dohenys 4 - 3, Courceys 3 - 3.

Outstanding for the winners were Coakley, O’Brien and Young in the back, with White, O’Driscoll and Keane best amongst the forwards. For Courceys, O’Donovan in goal, Kearney, Nolan and Hales were the pick of the defenders, whilst Corcoran, Keogh and Fitzgerald were always trying in the forward line.

The winners will now meet the winners of the Éire Óg v Inniscarra Mid-Cork championship tie, in the interdivisional championship, which, in all probability will be fixed for Bandon, it being most central for all parties involved. A word of commendation is earned by the Bandon Club for the very fine arrangements for last Sunday’s game and a tribute is due to Mr. Batt Crowley, groundsman, in having the pitch in fine mettle.

At the conclusion of the game the divisional trophy was presented to the victorious captain, C. Coakley, by Mr. A. Ó Ceocháin, secretary of the South West Cork Divisional Board.

Mr. Donie Crowley, Bandon G.A.A., was the referee and the teams were –

     Dohenys – C. Coakley (capt..), P. Cronin, G. McCarthy, E. O’Mahony, E. Young, D. Lyons, S. O’Mahony, R. White, J. O’Sullivan, D. King, S. Keane, J. Bernard, F. O’Driscoll, M. O’Brien, P. Coady. Subs, P. McCarthy and W.J. Barry.

    Courcey Rovers – C. Corcoran, M. Nolan, L. Keogh, C. O’Regan, D. Twomey, J. Keohane, T. Fitzgerald, S. Nyhan, J. Hales, T. O’Donovan, D. Griffin, D. Crowley, J. Hegarty, D. Twomey, D. Collins.

Another Title for Dohenys (‘Dunmanway Doings’) -

‘Winning the South West Cork Junior Football title on Sunday week, Dohenys have now won the South West Cork Junior Hurling title when they brought off a surprise win over Courcies in the final, which was played at Bandon last Sunday. The final score was Dohenys 4-3, Courcies 3-3. Courcies, who were the holders of the hurling title for the past five years, were completely overpowered and outplayed by one of the greatest and best Doheny teams ever sent out.

What made this victory still greater was the fact that the Doheny Club did not affiliate a junior hurling team for about at least fifteen years until this year. They had almost gone completely off this grade but the wise decision of the Club to gain have a go has now proved that the material is again there and there to stay.

It is believed to be the Dohenys first time ever winning the South West Cork Junior Hurling title but some locals say, however, that they won it before some thirty years ago. In is, in fact, however, the first time that the Dohenys brought off the double by winning the South West Cork Junior Hurling and Junior Football titles in one year.

Dohenys were complete masters in the first half of the game, leading by one goal and three points to nil at the short whistle.

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Dohenys met Éire Óg in Bandon on September 21st and were rank outsiders against the Muskerry champions. However, they surprised everybody with a great display that more than matched their opponents in one of the fastest games played in Bandon for years. Against the wind Dohenys conceded a quick goal and two points but then held the opposition scoreless for the rest of the half. Two points closed the gap to 1-2, to 0-2, with Dohenys missing many scores because of the constant ‘picking’ by the full forward line. Both sides scored two points in the third quarter as Dohenys continued to press, but they tired in the closing minutes, conceding three points. It finished 1-7 to 0-4. Best for Dohenys were Farr (goal), O’Brien, Coakley, Young, King and White.

The Doheny Team

1

The pride of the south,

They are without doubt;

And their golden record is bright,

As the Bandon a-flowin’

From lofty Mount Owen,

At noon in the Summer sunlight.

2

As hardy as bricks

Are the team ‘Forty-six,’

Ever hopeful of victory they seem,

All must be wide awake,

Who will venture to take

A chance with the bold Doheny team.

3

Their hearts gay and light

Are in days dark and bright,

To tradition they’ve always been true.

Mighty rivals in quest,

Of renown in their best,

Have in vain striven them to outdo.

4

And they to a man

Are akin to a clan

Who to Erin proved loyal in need,

Fanlubbos today,

I would venture to say,

No players, thy sons, could exceed.

5

Of the G.A.A.

The wonder are they,

And exactly what they at sight seem.

Through the ages shall long

Be remembered in song,

The men of the bold Doheny team.
