Dohenys 4-8     Kilbrittain 0-1

 August 30th in Bandon

Playing with great gusto and showing some delightful hurling artistry, Dohenys defeated Kilbrittain in the West Cork Junior Hurling final played at the Charlie Hurley Park, Bandon, on Sunday last before the largest crowd ever at a West Cork Divisional Hurling final (£90 18s 0d) on the score of 4 goals 8 points to a solitary point for  Kilbrittain.

Playing with a strong sun to their backs in the first half, the Dohenys piled on the pressure right from the throw-in and despite great efforts on the part of some of the Kilbrittain backs, notably goalie M. O’Regan, who saved his side from a most disastrous beating. It was evident that sooner or later their defence was going to collapse. The Kilbrittain forwards could make no impression against a stone-wall Dohenys defence. A feature of the Dohenys play was the passing on to a colleague when in difficulty. Eddy Young’s solo playing and ball control helped in no small way to keep up interest in this one-way traffic, drab final.

PITCH TOO FAST

Bandon Gaels had the arrangements well-night perfect. The pitch was never better, so much so that some people thought it was much too fast for the Kilbrittain team, who seemed to be tired from the start. They, no doubt, suffered from the after-effects of the previous Sunday’s gruelling game with Courcey Rovers. It has been hotly debated since whether Courceys would put up a better show against Dunmanway. Most are of the opinion that the Dohenys were not seen to full advantage on Sunday last and that it will take a much sterner opposition than at present available in West Cork to conquer them.

THE GAME

Having had a couple of wides, it was centre forward, Eddy Young, who had the opening score, a point after six minutes play. Then in the tenth minute, P. Keating, who had a splendid game at centre field during the hour, landed a goal from a 70 yards. Dick White had a goal and a point in the 20th and 22nd minutes. Ned Aherne had Kilbrittain’s only score, a point in the 25th minute, and Young finished a solo run with a lovely point. The half time score was: Dohenys 2-3; Kilbrittain 0-1.

NO CHANGE IN SECOND PERIOD

On the change over after the interval, Dohenys bombarded the Kilbrittain goal at will and had further points from White and Young in the 31st and 38th minutes. Then J. Bernard signalled his presence (as a substitute) in the 41st minute by slamming home a goal, followed by another from Seán Keane a minute later.

In the 44th and 47th minutes Young had a brace of points and in the 50th minute Keating added a point which was the last score of the game. Meanwhile, Kilbrittain trying to stem the tide, managed to get the ball up to the town goal on a few occasions but were met by a resolute defence, who cleard at will.

Best for Dohenys were O’Brien, J. O’Mahony, C. Coakley, Keating, White, Young, and for Kilbrittain, Cowhig, S. O’Sullivan, F. O’Brien and Regan (goalie) were seen to advantage.

Mr. Connie O’Brien (Clonakilty) was the referee.

Mr. Peadar Williams, N.T., Divisional Hon. Treasurer, presented the divisional trophy to M. Farr, captain of the winning team.

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Dohenys met Cobh in the county championship on October 11th in the Athletic Grounds, as a curtain-raiser to the National Hurling League game in which Kilkenny beat Cork. The East Cork champions proved too good on the day as they raced into a lead of 3-3 after only ten minutes. The Cobh full forward line was a huge threat all through and the goalie brought off some great saves. Cobh still led by four goals at half time but when Dohenys scored two fast goals after the break, a comeback looked on the way. It was not to be as Cobh again resumed control to run out winners by 7-8 to 3-4. Best for Dohenys were D.D. Lyons and Con Coakley in defence, Mick Farr at midfield and Dick White,, Edda Young and J. Hennessy in attack.

Cobh went on to win the county title.

The draws for the SW Junior A hurling championship 1959 were - Bandon v Dohenys, Bantry v Clonakilty, Ballinacarriga v Courcey Rovers, Kilbrittain v O’Donovan Rossa.

DOUBLE AGAIN

As in 1958 Dohenys again captured the SW double in junior A football and hurling. They reached the county football final but were defeated by a Dromtarriff team that was later declared illegal by the County Board. Controversially, Dohenys were not awarded the title.
